The base foundation going to depend on the ground. Normally we recommend between 8’’ inches to 1 foot deep in the preparation. Yes it's deep, more of 4” inches like a lot of landscaper companies do.
A driveway is different of a walkway, we are going to use it for a car, park there every day, drive back and forth 2 or 3 times per day. On long term it’s heavy, that why It’s very important to have a strong and good foundation.
Also, there is going to depend on the ground if it is: strong with rock, soft or have clay?

We remove topsoil and/or asphalt, excavate between 8 inches to 1 foot deep, first compaction, install a landscape fabric layer if needed, and add one layer of clear crush. This base improves drainage and prevents sinking.
The Driveway will need to be compacted on 3 phase. First directly from the ground after excavate, second over the crush add and third over the road base. We gonna use the compactor plate 1500 lbs to have a perfect ground compacted.
Fill 1 inch of sand or crusher dust, make on level with slope 1% or more to guide water away.
Block by Block, We lay the chosen stone in a specific pattern. Be sure we stay straight and fallow the line. Cut and clean. Go Go Go !
